In 2004 the city of Modena engaged the architect Marco Dezzi Bardeschi of the Milan Politecnico to restore some rooms of the medieval Palazzo Comunale which has housed the city’s public institutions since the Middle Ages. In particular, those spaces serving as stores in the 19th century have been converted into Tourist offices and a brand new hall. By highlighting the most ancient features of the building the conversion has allowed an improved reading of its historical and symbolical relevance. The sky painted by Vittorio Locatelli upon the vaulted ceiling of the rooms represents the constellations with reference to three very important dates in the history of the city: the Liberation Day of Modena on
22nd April, the Italian National Freedom Day on 25th April and the Workers' Day on 1st May. During these three days in 1945 a radical political change to Democracy took place in Modena and the “new” painted sky is meant to symbolize the “new” political direction. Daniele Lombardi has composed and performed the piano solo piece "COSTELLAZIONE SECONDA"(also by the use of a second piano resonance and digital processing) in order to pay tribute to these three very important historical dates.
